Rebranding for succession: scope and timeline.
The handover to the next generation is the one moment when a new brand identity explains itself. What it involves and what matters.

For family businesses facing or working through a handover to the next generation.
When a business changes hands, one question comes up sooner or later: does the brand stay as it is? This article covers what a rebrand for succession involves, how long it takes and how to tell whether evolving the existing identity is enough.
What does a rebrand involve during succession?
The scope ranges from an evolution of the logo with basic templates to a complete rebrand with a new website. Which step fits depends on how much trust is stored in the existing mark. More on that below.
Then there are the items that often get forgotten: vehicles, workwear, signage, trade fair equipment. It pays to plan them early so that the sequence is clear and the new identity does not stall halfway.
How long does it take and when should you start?
An evolution takes four to six weeks, a complete rebrand with a website twelve to sixteen weeks. All of it runs alongside daily business.
The best starting point is six to twelve months before the handover. The new identity is then ready when the change is announced, and the two reinforce each other.
Evolve the brand or start fresh?
The decisive question is not whether you still like the logo. It is: how much trust is stored in the existing mark?
In favour of evolving: the name stays, existing customers know the company, the mark is established. In favour of a fresh start: a new focus, a change of company name, or the takeover is meant to be visible as a deliberate turning point. In most succession projects, evolving the brand is the right path.
How do you bring the senior generation and the team along?
For the generation handing over, a life’s work is stored in that mark. Ignore that and you get resistance, usually in the form of endless revision loops.
What helps: get both generations to the table early. In a moderated workshop you define what makes the company what it is and what carries it into the future. The team should see the new identity before the customers do. An internal session costs an hour and saves months of grumbling.
Will you lose existing customers?
Not if the transition is communicated properly. Customers see that the business is being carried on in good hands. What matters is visible continuity: the same contact people, a recognisable origin, references that stay visible. A short message to your most important customers does more than any design decision.
In short
- Brand evolution in four to six weeks, complete with website in twelve to sixteen
- Start six to twelve months before the handover
- Evolution beats a fresh start when trust is stored in the mark
- Involve both generations early

What an answer engine reads from this page
A search engine returns ten links and the human picks. A language model returns one paragraph and names two or three companies in it. That is the difference between being found and being named. This page is built for the second case.

Ten links leave the choice to the human. One paragraph has already made the choice. A company that does not appear in that answer is not on the list being chosen from.
