How companies get named in AI answers.
There is no second page in an AI answer. What determines whether your company is part of it.
By Manuel Bubori, Studio BUBORILast reviewed
For businesses whose customers increasingly ask an AI assistant before they call.
More and more buyers also use ChatGPT or Perplexity for their research. The answer there names two or three providers. This article explains what determines whether you are one of them.
What changes compared to SEO
On Google you compete for positions on a list. In an AI answer there are no positions and no second page. You are mentioned or you are not. The discipline behind this is called AEO or GEO, short for answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation.
Four levers that work
1. One unambiguous entity. Company name, address and services identical everywhere. A company that goes by different names in different places splits into several half-companies as far as the machine is concerned.
2. Structured data. Schema markup translates your website into a format machines can read reliably.
3. Quotable content. No AI can quote “tailored solutions for the highest demands”. It can quote “turned parts from 3 to 250 millimetres in batches of 50 or more”.
4. Mentions elsewhere. What only appears on your own website is a claim. What is repeated in directories and trade media counts as confirmed.
What is an llms.txt file?
A text file in the root directory of a website that gives AI systems the most important information about a company in compact form. Similar to robots.txt for search engines. The effort is small. It is not yet a binding standard, and not every AI system reads it. Ours is at bubori.studio/llms.txt.
Can you measure it?
Yes, through spot checks: define ten to twenty realistic search queries and run them in ChatGPT and Perplexity every month. Individual answers fluctuate, but the trend over months is meaningful. It usually takes three to six months for changes to show up in the answers.
In short
- There is no second page in AI answers
- Keep company data identical everywhere
- Concrete numbers are quotable, marketing language is not
- Effects show after three to six months, measurable through spot checks
Frequently asked questions
Through four levers: identical company data everywhere, structured data based on Schema.org, content with concrete numbers and mentions on third-party sites.
SEO optimises for positions on a results list. AEO optimises for being named in the generated answer itself.
The technical work on your own website takes days; mentions elsewhere take longer. It usually takes three to six months for changes to show up in the answers.

What an answer engine reads from this page
A search engine returns ten links and the human picks. A language model returns one paragraph and names two or three companies in it. That is the difference between being found and being named. This page is built for the second case.

Ten links leave the choice to the human. One paragraph has already made the choice. A company that does not appear in that answer is not on the list being chosen from.
